LINK is the UK's national cash machine (ATM) interchange
network and the busiest ATM transaction switch in the world. At peak, the LINK switch processes almost 1 million transactions
per hour.
There are nearly 130 million LINK-enabled cards in circulation
from 38 card issuing financial institutions. Over 61,000 ATMs are connected to the LINK network - effectively
every ATM in the UK.
The LINK network is a fundamental part of the
UK's payments infrastructure and cash machines are by far the most popular
channel for cash withdrawal
in the UK, used by millions of consumers every week.
The number of ATMs connected to the LINK network, transaction volumes, and the value
of cash withdrawn from ATMs have all grown rapidly since the launch of the network in 1986 and this is expected
to continue (see
LINK statistics).
LINK’s Role
VocaLink provides the physical switch for these transactions
while the LINK ATM Scheme sets the rules, practices and procedures.
The LINK ATM Scheme is open to every ATM operator
and card issuer in the UK.
LINK does not install ATMs itself or
make charges on the customers who use them.
The LINK ATM Scheme ensures universal, reliable
and secure access to cash and maintains and enforces fair rules
for technical standards,
interchange, charging and signage.
The LINK ATM Scheme does not select suitable
ATM locations and is neither for nor against ATM charges. These
decisions are made by individual members.
