LINK cash machine withdrawals were up by 4.6% during the Olympics, compared to the same 17 day period last year.

Fuelled by the events going on throughout the country and the better weather, ATMs dispensed over a quarter of a billion pounds more to Brits compared with 2011.

LINK cash withdrawals between Friday 27 July and Sunday 12 August rose by £270 million or 4.6% from £5.838 billion to £6.108 billion when compared to the same period last year,

John Howells, LINK Scheme CEO comments:  “August is normally a quiet month for ATM withdrawals but so far 2012 has proved the exception.  This extra cash should boost spending which should prove a valuable bonus to retailers.”

 * LINK cash withdrawals do not include the vast majority of overseas card withdrawals, customers using their own banks’ or building societies’ ATMs or ATMs within the Olympic venues.
