LINK, the UK’s cash access and ATM network, has today announced recommendations for five new banking hubs including Launceston, which when it opens will become the tenth in Cornwall.

Following bank branch closures announced today, LINK has confirmed new hubs will open in Ashby-de-la-Zouch (Leicestershire), Cromer (Norfolk), Launceston (Cornwall), Portishead (Somerset) and Torquay (Devon).

Banking hubs are a shared banking space, similar to a traditional bank branch, but available to everyone. When opened, the hubs will consist of a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash, make bill payments and carry out regular banking transactions. In addition, there will be private spaces where customers can speak to community bankers from their own bank for more complicated matters that require specialist knowledge or privacy. The banks will be working on a rotating basis, so there will be staff from different banks available on different days.

LINK has now recommended 231 banking hubs. The hubs will be delivered by Cash Access UK, who have delivered more than 160 hubs to date.

Cornwall has benefited the most from banking hubs so far. There are currently eight hubs open in Bodmin, Bude, Hayle, Helston, Looe, Newquay, Redruth and Saltash. Today’s news means further hubs will open in Falmouth and Launceston later this year.

Dr Chris Ashton, Chief Commercial Officer, LINK: “Banking hubs are proving popular in the communities where they’ve opened. We’re pleased to confirm five new hubs today and will continue to assess locations to ensure people’s everyday access to cash needs are met.”
